Psychology Scholarships

When you are planning to go to college to study psychology, it is in your best interest to strive to get psychology scholarships. Because college tuition is so expensive, scholarships can help offset the large prices. Believe it or not, advanced degree tuition is actually more expensive that undergraduate degree tuition. So, as you progress through your psychology program, you will need more and more scholarship money to help you cover the costs.

High School Scholarship Research

If you are in high school and preparing for your first college degree, you can speak to your counselor to let him or her help you find the psychology scholarships that will meet your needs. Your school system might have scholarships for students who are simply planning on going to college; they may not be specially designated for psychology programs.

APA Scholarships

One of the best places to look for a psychology scholarship is the APA organization. APA is short for American Psychological Association. Most people know of this organization from their research paper organization standards that most scientific programs use when documenting sources in a research paper. They are also a clearing house for anything related to psychology.

Degree Specific Scholarships

There are scholarships available for scholarships based on the degree field you will be studying. There are scholarships for those students who plan to study topics ranging from clinical psychology to media and consumer psychology to social and personality psychology.

Recipient Based Scholarships

You can also apply for the many scholarships that are based on the recipient. For example, if you are a senior citizen looking to return to college to advance a degree or to earn a degree, there is a scholarship for you. If you are an educator or a clinical psychologist looking for scholarship money, you can find it.

Intern or Fellowship Scholarships

You can also find scholarships that will help you get a master’s or doctorate degree. There are also scholarship programs for those who need to serve in an internship or fellowship program. There are also scholarships available for students who are planning or in the process of writing their dissertations.

Many scholarships are sponsored by different agencies. The APA itself sponsors many psychology scholarships. Private organizations, hospitals, government entities, and other organizations also sponsor successful scholarship programs. Many other psychology related scholarships are given to students who are pursuing careers in the medical field. And, many of those scholarships are designated for students who are planning on attending specific schools.

Some scholarships are called:

  • Nellie Martin Carmer Scholarship Fund (For students in the state of Washington pursuing psychology degrees)
  • NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (National Science Foundation Award for those needing money for pursuing a fellowship program)

Most scholarship programs require that students fill out a FAFSA form so that the scholarship programs know what money is really needed. Most scholarships are locally driven, so it is important to consult with your college financial aid office to see what is available at the local level.

Under the Latino Health Scholars Program, there are also some psychology scholarships for bicultural and bilingual students for pursuing careers in psychology. At the same time, there is Native American Assistance for registered tribal members who desire a degree in Psychology or Guidance Counseling.
